It seems like every two weeks there’s some new self-care trend taking Tiktok by storm. It can all feel a little overwhelming, can’t it? The self-care habits that catch my attention are the ones that I’ve watched people do online for years. Here are a few of my own habits that have stood the test of time.

I make my bed every single morning.
This habit is scientifically proven to positively impact your life on a deep level. There’s even a book written all about it!* When I wake up each morning, usually after I use the bathroom, I make my bed. I really make it. I tuck my duvet in, pull my sheets taut, and fluff my pillows. It’s definitely psychological, but it makes or breaks my first 10 minutes out of bed.
I schedule 1-2 hours of “Smooth-Brain Time” per week.
Smooth Brain Time: (n) specific allotted time to be unproductive and simply exist (ie. watching one episode of Summer House on Bravo, playing Township on my phone, or watching a Disney travel vlog on Youtube).
As someone who years ago wore her burnout like a badge of honor, this allocated brain rest time is crucial for me. It makes me a better artist, a better friend, and a more efficient goal-setting human being overall. It also feels really good.
Only scroll your favorites on Instagram.
I, like everyone else on the planet with social media, can fall victim to doom-scrolling and it just always seems to happen on the days when my psyche could use a soft touch. One of the ways I combat this on those days is by only scrolling the creators I personally have marked “Favorites” on Instagram - specifically people whose content brings me joy or inspiration. Let me know if you’d like a more in-depth explanation of this practice in the comments.
xx,
KDC.
